    Description

    Original Civil War appointment (warrant) of Corp. William J. Bastien as Sgt. of Battery F, 1st Regiment Rhode Island Light Artillery, dated at Winchester, Va., Dec. 28, 1864.
    Measures approx. 14-3/4" x 10-1/4". Eagle and shield vignette at top.
    Signed by John A. Tompkins, Major, Commanding the Regiment.
    William J. Bastien was mustered into Battery F, 1st RI Light Artillery on Apr. 3, 1862, and was mustered out at Richmond, Va. on April 5, 1865.
    John A. Tompkins, was brevetted Lt. Col. in Aug., 1864, for gallantry before Richmond. At Antietam, he was Capt. of Battery A, and was engaged in heavy fighting. He served as Chief of Artillery, 1st Division, 6th Army Corps, from March 26, 1863 to June 25, 1863.
