    Description

I buy vintage linens and clothing at local estate auctions to pass them along to you, and have found these heirloom treasures.
These are antique mourning accessories for a Victorian woman.  They are part of the estate with the black silk mourning veil and a pair of black silk fingerless mitts that I have also listed.  These are two scarves or neckpieces made of woven silk.  There is a solid black silk piece measuring 34 by 4" with a laddered hem at each end.  The silk on this is strong and very dark black.  You can picture it with a stick pin or brooch at the neck.
The second piece is extraordinary: a strip measuring ~4.5 by 36" made of fancy textured woven silk in black and ivory.  It has 4" of knotted fringe at each end.  The ends have large emblems of interlocked rings.  I surmise that these are symbols of the loss of a spouse for mourning.  In addition to the emblems at each end, there is a strip running the length of the piece with an elaborate figured pattern in ivory and black.  I hope you can appreciate the detail on this  - please use the zoom function on the photos.
Both of these are in excellent antique condition.  I have hand laundered and pressed these with a pressing cloth, and found the fabric to be in sound shape, soft and strong and lustrous.  There is a bit of discoloration on the ivory portions, and the fringe is a bit brittle, but those are minor issues.   These are a great historic record of mourning accessories.
Please contact me if you need more information.  I apologize for listing these in Mourning Jewelry, but eBay has removed antique categories where these more properly belong.
