    Description

1867 autograph letter signed by Lucius Fairchild (1831-1896), who was governor of Wisconsin 1866-1872 and colonel of the 2nd Wisconsin (part of the famed "iron brigade").  He lost an arm at Gettysburg, and commissioned brigadier general in October 1863, but resigned and then served as Secretary of state of Wisconsin before becoming governor.  Letter is on the state executive office letterhead and directed to fellow Wisconsin soldier William Emerson Strong (12th WI colonel; brevet brigadier general).  Letter apologies that Fairchild cannot be present at Strong's wedding; neat content about being "mustered into the army of married men"....."you must remember that you enlist in that army as a private soldier, not as a General, and must work you wak up the same as you did in the United States Army.  Your wife will be the promoting appointing power and I doubt not will make you a major general before many years if you obey orders ..."  Neat personal content.
