Description

See my other Japn/China customs house document now listed. THIS JAPAN CUSTOMS HOUSE FORM COMES FROM THE SAME SHIP'S LOGBOOK AS THE SHANGHAI/YOKOHAMA CUSTOMS DOC THAT I LISTED A FEW DAYS AGO.  I INCLUDE A PHOTO OF THE SHIP'S LOGBOOK ENTRY FOR YOKOHAMA.  ABOUT 9 X 6 1/2 INCHES, WITH 3 JAPANESE INKSTAMPS, JAPANESE WRITING AND A NOTATION IN ENGLISH ON THE VERSO STATING KANAGAWA CUSTOMS.  NO DATE IN ENGLISH, BUT ABOUT APRIL, 1867.  YOKOHAMA ONLY OPENED TO TRADING IN 1859, SO THIS CUSTOMS DOCUMENT FOR THE SHIP "JAPAN" IS QUITE EARLY.  SOME BROWNING AT THE TWO FOLDS, BUT VERY GOOD. THIS EARLY A JAPANESE INKSTAMPED CUSTOMS DOC IS QUITE SCARCE.
Commodore
Matthew Perry
landed in Kanagawa in 1853 and 1854 and signed the
Convention of Kanagawa
to force open Japanese ports to the United States.
Yokohama
, the largest deep-water port in
Tokyo Bay
, was opened to foreign traders in 1859 after several more years of foreign pressure, and eventually developed into the largest trading port in Japan.
