    Description

1865 letter written and signed by John Corse (1835-1893), a brigadier general in the civil war.  He initially served as major of the 6th Iowa, then on the staff of Pope, and as Sherman's inspector general.  He is best known for his role at Allatoona, and eventually received a brevet as major general.  Postwar, Corse became a regional collector of revenue in Chiago, then postmaster of Boston.  Letter is from Savannah GA where Corse was serving, and is a recommendation for promotion for William E. Strong.  Mounted to album page at left.
