    Description

This April 1864 Confederate order extract details the assignment of three brigade commanders to General Joseph Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps of the Army of Tennessee just prior to the commencement of the Atlanta Campaign. The order appears under a pre-printed header reading, “Head Quarters, Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee.” The first portion of the order assigns Colonel George G. Dibrell’s brigade of Tennessee cavalry (4th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th regiments) to General John H. Kelly’s Division. Next, Colonel J. Warren Grigsby was relieved from his command in Kelly’s Division. He would be reassigned with the Kentucky brigade to Humes’ Division for the coming campaign. This brigade included the 1st, 2nd, and 9th Kentucky Cavalry regiments, along with three Kentucky battalions. The last officer mentioned in the order is Colonel Thomas Harrison, who would command another brigade in Humes’ Division (a mixed brigade of the 3rd Arkansas, 4th Tennessee, 8th Texas, and 11th Texas Cavalry regiments).
This particular order was addressed to General John H. Kelly’s headquarters.
The document is docketed on the reverse. It measures about 7” x 9” and is in excellent condition with light toning and foxing. Creased at the original folds. The full transcript follows:
